Can Americans claim Asylum in Canada?
One American family is already seeking asylum in Canada, citing Trump. So if you’re wondering if you’re crazy while Googling this information, just know people are already trying to claim asylum in Canada.
But most Americans have never even thought about asylum. Why would we? And it seems like Americans think they can just show up in another country claiming they’re in danger. The family who arrived in Canada claiming asylum didn’t even have their passports.
C’mon, guys. This is the kind of shit that makes American's look bad. It’s disrespectful to Canada and the rules they have in place for immigration. Did you know that Canada requires a language test for visas? And you couldn’t even bring the basic documents for international travel? Not a good look.
What I love about this is that Canada is granting a fair and safe hearing. I have a new appreciation for basic liberties these days. This case is going to be interesting to track because it will likely set a precedent for people evacuating in fear of discrimination.
My fear is that Canada is going to see more of these drop-ins from panicked Americans. Especially when our president says he is going to start sending American citizens to El Salvador. It gets more alarming when people are being sent to a terrorist prison without a trial. This means that anyone, anywhere, could be kidnapped and taken to El Salvador with no return and no trial to prove innocence.
So, yes. Reason for concern. People don’t feel safe. But can we just casually swing by our neighbors to the north and expect them to take us? No. It doesn’t work that way.
Upon entry into Canada, you can claim asylum, and Canada will review your case and grant you a visa until your case is heard. Every situation is considered on a case-by-case basis. You’ll need to consult with a lawyer.
